Island Life: Photographs from the Martin Parr Foundation

Peter Mitchell

Born 1943, Salford

Mitchell’s family moved to London and he grew up in Catford, attending Hornsey College of Art. After a variety of jobs in the 1960s he moved to Leeds in 1972 and found the chapel that’s been his studio ever since. While working as a truck driver he started taking photos of the city, with the aid of a stepladder he kept in the truck. His 1979 exhibition of 65 of these images, ‘A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission’, broke new ground because it was art photography in colour.
