Island Life: Photographs from the Martin Parr Foundation

Ian Weldon

Born 1973, Durham

‘I realised that things happen at a wedding. I’d be busy ordering people around, and I would miss those interesting moments. The idea came to me: why can’t I just shoot weddings like a documentary project? And here we are.’

Ian Weldon initially ran a photography studio in Newcastle to support his personal projects. But his photographs didn’t conform to conventional portraiture. He was drawn to comical moments when people are off guard, stressed, children pulling faces or finally relaxing after the first dance. I am not a Wedding Photographer was exhibited in June 2019 – wedding season – at the Martin Parr Foundation.
