Macdonald grew up in Thorntree, Middlesbrough and his work records the iron, steel and fishery industries in the region. Since 1968 he has photographed consistently across the hinterland of his native Cleveland in the north east of England. Images from this body of work have been exhibited widely in England and selected prints are held in many public and private art collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Danish Royal Library, The Navigation Foundation, Boston Ma, USA and Southampton City Art Gallery.
