Humphrey Spender

Born 1910,London, died 2005 Essex

From a literary family, Spender studied art history then architecture, before setting up a photography studio on the Strand. He worked for the Daily Mirror under the name Lensman. Spender photographed working class life in Bolton for the Mass Observation movement in 1937 – 8, some of which is in the 1970s book Worktown People. Spender was an early adopter of the rangefinder camera and 35mm film, attempting to photograph unnoticed, to avoid staging, shooting from waist height, or with his camera resting on a table. He was an official war photographer in World War II.
