Island Life: Photographs from the Martin Parr Foundation

Anna Fox

Born 1961, Alton, Hampshire

Fox was taught at West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham by Martin Parr and Karen Knorr. Their influence can be seen in the lurid colour, satirical tone and ironic captions in series from Basingstoke 1985-86 , to Afterwards, her images of post-rave sleepers in the cold light of the day after (also in Basingstoke).

Her weirdly personal Cockroach Diary, 41 Hewitt Road and My Mother’s Cupboards and my Father’s Words series, present two sides to confessional documentary. She collaborated with musician Alison Goldfrapp on the Guy Bourdin-esque LP cover for Felt Mountain (Country Girls), echoing the richly coloured, sinister setups of the French photographer.
