John Davies

Born 1949, County Durham

Davies grew up among coal mining and farming communities. He studied photography at Mansfield then at Trent Polytechnic (now Nottingham Trent University). In 1992 he became a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and has lived in Liverpool since 2001. He is interested in the politics of space: industrialisation, de-industrialisation and regeneration, and has made series of work on these subjects in northern England and southern Wales, and also in France, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia and Japan. He has produced many photobooks such as The Valleys Project and This Green and Pleasant Land. In 2008 Davies was shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize.
