Island Life: Photographs from the Martin Parr Foundation

Marcelo Brodsky

Born Argentina, 1954

Brodsky was forced into exile after the coup of 1976, relocating to Barcelona, where he studied economics and photography. He returned in 1994. His work takes the form of activism and is conceptual. Buena Memoria uses a 1967 graduation photograph of the Colegio Nacional de Buenes Aires, as a means of recalling the memory of the students who were later ‘disappeared’ during Argentina’s Dirty War. This included Brodsky’s own brother Fernando. On returning to Buenos Aires, Brodsky sought out the survivors and took their photographs, annotating the graduation picture with the details of every sitter, alive or disappeared.
