Island Life: Photographs from the Martin Parr Foundation

Mark Neville

Born 1966, London

‘Much of my work deals with the way in which society disseminates and filters images, often according to class and income or in response to political or “artistic” frameworks.’

Neville’s photographs are collaborations with his subjects. His work is ‘at the intersection of art and documentary, investigating the social function of photography’, influenced by the political conceptualism of John Berger, Martha Rosler and Hans Hacke. Often working with close knit communities he seeks the overlooked, such as the former farm and abattoir workers caring for abused animals in Brittany (Parade 2019). His approach is an attempt to rewrite the rules of documentary, such as his still and moving image project in Helmand Province, Afghanistan where he was a war artist in 2010-11.
