Raymond Moore

‘I used to take the equipment home with me at the weekend and teach myself. I bought Ansel Adams’ books and devoured them and slowly began to discover the ABCs of photography.’

After World War II, when he served in the RAF, Moore studied painting at the Royal College of Art. He became interested in the pictorial potential of landscape photography. On graduation he established the photography department at Watford College, basing his teachings on Bauhaus tutors Otto Steinart and László Moholgy Nagy’s philosophy of subjectivity. His own work was in black and white, absorbing the weather traces of the Cumbrian landscape where he settled once he ceased teaching.
