Japanese porcelain designs
日本磁器の文様
Makers of Japanese porcelain used a number of different sources for their designs.
They were inspired by patterns from the Middle East and imagery and symbolism from Chinese culture and literature, as well as existing Japanese textile patterns.
From the 1800s, Japanese craftsmen developed their own designs, creating bold designs with visual puns. Many motifs embody wishes for fortune, good health, and luck.
